Released in 2017 and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, ‘Mother!‘ uses biblical allegories to tell the story of a couple who move into a mansion while trying to start a new life.

As he focuses on his craft as a writer and plots a sweeping story, she tries to turn the mansion into a real home.

However, the arrival of a stranger triggers a series of catastrophic events that bring her to the brink of madness, including visions of a heart pounding on the walls of the house.

Despite the thought-provoking premise, ‘Mom!‘ just received 68% of critical approval and was a commercial disaster, grossing meager $44 million around the world, from a budget of $32 million.

To make matters worse, the feature was nominated in 2018 to several categories of the Golden Raspberry, considered the most feared award in cinema for choosing the worst movies and performances of a given year.

Besides worst direction, the ‘misunderstood work’ of Aronofsky still yielded the nominations of Worst Supporting Actor e worst actress, which generated a shower of negative comments about Lawrence.

After the bad reception, the star avoided going into details about the film, and even showed the middle finger to a team of journalists at a press conference in New York when pressed about the details of the plot.
